Google Photos Ends Support for Older Devices
(Google Photos Old Device Support Terminated)
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. [Date] – Google Photos will stop working on some older phones and tablets soon. The change happens July 19, 2024. This affects devices running outdated software.
Phones using Android 7.0 “Nougat” or older versions lose support. Apple devices using iOS 14 or earlier also lose support. These operating systems are many years old. Security updates stopped long ago.
Users with these devices face problems after July 19. The Google Photos app may crash. It might not open at all. Photos and videos stored only in the app become inaccessible. Syncing to the cloud fails.
Google suggests two solutions. Update your device’s operating system if possible. Newer Android or iOS versions keep access. Otherwise, use Google Photos through a web browser. The browser version works on any device.
Google explains this decision. Old software struggles with modern security needs. Maintaining compatibility slows down new features. The company focuses on current technology standards.
People should check their device settings now. Look under “About Phone” or “General” settings. Find the operating system version. Act before July to avoid disruptions. Back up photos elsewhere for safety.

Google Photos remains free for basic use. This change only impacts very old hardware. Most users have newer devices already.
